This map and the Militia District information is posted with permission of the of the author of the book "An 1800 Census for Lincoln County, Georgia", Frank Parker Hudson. This book was compiled from tax records for 1801 and 1802. If you want a lookup from this book, contact Liz Nash.
Militia Districts in Georgia are political subdivisions which might be called districts, beats, parishes and possibly other names in other states and would pertain to where and whom taxes were paid, and where one voted among other things. The Tax Digests are the most important use of these genealogically as they often are the only census subsititute for the early census records. The letters in bold type where assigned by Mr. Hudson and the numbers in bold are still in use much unchanged today and can be seen on many modern maps. The Wilkes County districts are included to help those researchers who need to find information about Lincoln County settlers before it was carved out of Wilkes County in 1796. Click here for more information about the origins of the militia districts.
